Six people from our ELCIC (BC, ABT and National) attended an international Stewardship Conference held last month in Toronto. It's theme, The Joy of Stewardship: A Guide to Generous Giving, came through loud and clear. Fine keynote speakers and an amazing array of workshops have sent all attendees home excited and joyful about telling others what they experienced. Call your synod office to invite a speaker to your congregation.

Stewardship Sample Paks containing materials for GO and SEE, the 2004-2005 theme, were mailed to all ELCIC congregations in May. Be sure that this fine resource gets into the hands of your stewardship team. Order during the summer months to be ready for September! orders@elcic.ca

At the Global Mission Event this summer it was good to partner with the ELCA, but the Canadian spirit was evident. A reception on opening night featured an "I am Canadian" poster. Several ELCIC leaders served as speakers. Offering designations included Urban Mission in Canada, ELCIC Missionary Sponsorship and GHDA. A complete review of the event will be posted soon at //elcic.ca/mission

Rev Elaine Sauer and five ELCIC leaders recently attended Come to the Feast, an ELCA gathering "to inspire and renew young adult ministry". Their strong gifts for leadership and ecumenical experiences were an example for all. esauer@elcic.ca for details

Stewardship in the National Office

Many of you order materials from the ELCIC National Office and have had the pleasure of dealing with Judy Long. Judy is not a shipping clerk. She is a Christian steward.

In Canada the cost of postage is on the rise - especially for fourth class packages. You have noticed that our "shipping and handling" charges are increasing. What you can't see is the care that Judy takes to keep that cost to a minimum.

Have you received your order in two parts? That's because Judy has taken the time to discover that two light packages cost less than one heavier one. Does your packing material look "recycled?" Judy is a wonderful scrounger and re-user of cardboard and bubble wrap. Have you been bothered by phone calls that reconfirm your address? Judy knows that poor handwriting can send a package to the wrong place. Surprised to get your package by bus? Judy has calculated the savings.

Judy also asks the rest of us to help out. Staff at National Office hand-deliver mail to our own congregations. Trips to synod offices often mean extra hand luggage so as to save postage. Coming to National Office for a meeting? Don't be surprised if Judy asks you to take back some materials recently ordered.

The next time that you add a few extra dollars onto your order form for shipping and handling, say a little prayer of thanks for Judy Long - steward.

Some of the resources mentioned in E-Communiqué are available from the ELCIC national office. If you prefer to order those materials in print, phone 1.888.786.6707 extension 177 or 204.984.9177; email orders@elcic.ca; or fax your order to 204.984.9185 "Attn Orders Desk". Be sure to fully describe the item and tell us the quantity you need. You will be invoiced when the order is filled.
