Winnipeg, 18 March 2007--The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada ELCIC)'s National Church Council (NCC) met in Winnipeg from March 15-17. The following is an overview of highlights from the third and final day of meetings:
NCC commenced on March 17 with Morning Prayer at 9:00 a.m.
Council approved the minutes of the September 2006 NCC meeting.
Council approved the minutes of the January 2007 NCC meeting.
Council received recommendations on the Constitution of the ELCIC and affirmed a motion to bring forward the recommendations to the 2007 National Convention for first reading concerning voting rights for a member of NCC appointed by the ACC and removing the word "lay" when referring to diaconal ministers.
Council received recommendations on the Administrative By-Laws of the ELCIC and affirmed a motion to bring forward recommendations to the 2007 and 2009 National Conventions.
The Audit Committee provided a report to Council which included revised terms of reference for the committee; the revised terms of reference were approved.
Council heard reflections on the meeting from Anglican Church of Canada (ACC) representative, the Very Rev. Peter Wall who noted that this was likely his last meeting with NCC. Rev. Wall noted the significance NCC meetings have had for him over the last three years and commended NCC member, the Rev. Sonja Free, for her representation of NCC to the Council of General Synod of ACC.
Council noted with appreciation the contributions Rev. Wall had brought to NCC over the past three years.
Future dates of NCC were noted as follows: Wednesday, June 20 and Thursday, September 27 to Saturday, September 29.
Council adjourned with prayers at 12:00 noon.
