BISHOP EMERITUS OF ESTONIAN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH DIES

Winnipeg, August 31, 2005 (ELCIC)-- With deep sadness the Consistory of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church has announced that Archbishop emeritus Dr. h.c. Jaan Kiivit died suddenly today, on 31st August 2005, on his official visit in St. Petersburg.

Jaan Kiivit was ordained in 1966 and elected the Estonian Evangelical Church archbishop in 1994.

He represented the EELC in many international conferences taking part in the Eighth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation in Curitiba (1980) as an official visitor, and as the EELC delegate to the Ninth Assembly of the Lutheran World Federation in Hong Kong (1997). Archbishop Jaan Kiivit was the first Estonian to be elected as member of the LWF Council.
