ELCIC MISSIONARY BRIAN RUDE TO RECEIVE AWARD

Winnipeg, January 6, 2004 (ELCIC) -- Rev Brian Rude, ELCIC Pastor working in El Salvador, has been chosen by the selection committee of the Canadian Churches' Forum for Global Ministry to be the recipient of the 5th annual Katharine Hockin Award for Global Mission and Ministry.

The following is an excerpt from the nomination:

"Brian Rude was commissioned as a missionary of the ELCIC in 1988 to serve the Fe y Esperanza orphanage of the Lutheran Church in El Salvador and act as a liaison between Canadians and Salvadorans. This was during the time of the civil war in El Salvador. Brian was often called upon to stand with the children he was working with in situations of extreme violence. He was once deported from the country because of his solidarity with people whose human rights were being violated.

In 1994, Brian shifted his focus to AIDS ministry and assisted the Roman Catholic Archdiocesan AIDS team, including their youth drama troup Luz de Luna, in conducting AIDS prevention/awareness workshops throughout the country. More recently, with funding from the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the ELCIC, he is helping to develop Quetzacoatl, a new foundation that promotes human well-being, self-esteem and AIDS prevention among prison inmates in El Salvador. In this work he also provides pastoral support for AIDS patients and family members.

In addition to his ministry in El Salvador, Brian has been intentional in his work of educating Canadians about the situation in Central America and globally. His newsletters are captivating and reach a broad spectrum of people. He is often in Canada and meets regularly with congregations and others to raise awareness. He has also welcomed many visitors to El Salvador and has been very effective in helping people from outside to see the true situation in the country and to be challenged to see the need for fundamental change in the world, based on the call of the Gospel.

From 2001-2003, Brian served as Regional Coordinator (Americas and Caribbean) for the LWF International Youth Program, focusing on globalization and leadership. He also teaches classes in the theology department of the Salvadoran Lutheran University."

Brian will receive his award at the 5th Annual Katharine Hockin Award Dinner in Toronto, February 21, 2004. For more information and tickets to this event, 416.924.9351 or admin@ccforum.ca
