Bonnie Weppler has a history of being at home in Papua New Guinea (PNG) where she has served as a missionary for several years beginning in 1997. In February 2002, she began a two-year ELCIC Short-term Missionary assignment as Administrative Assistant and Training Officer. Living in Lae, where she works in the Finance Office of the Evangelical Lutheran Church-PNG under a joint placement with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

In February 2004, her position changed to Long-term Missionary and her job description expanded to include duties with the Interchurch Relations and Ecumenism office such as assisting with preparations for the annual fourm with the ELC-PNG's international partner churches. She represented the ELC-PNG at a Lutheran World Federation sponsored "south to south" consultation in Madagascar in November 2004 regarding missionaries who are sent and received by Lutheran churches within the southern hemisphere.

A native of Ontario, Bonnie graduated from Wilfred Laurier University in Waterloo, ON, with majors in both French and Business Administration. After university she moved to Montreal where her employment included Director of Development and Public relations at Sacred Heart School as well as secretarial positions in various departments of Concordia University.

Although established in the workforce, Bonnie had a desire to serve beyond her congregation and community. The opportunity arose under the auspices of the ELCIC Volunteers in Mission (VIM) program from December 1996 to June 1998 when Bonnie served with the Human Development Centre Bundun of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of PNG as assistant trainer for home economics, hospitality, accounting and budgeting. This allowed her the opportunity to become fluent in Melanesian Pidgin and develop an understanding of the realities of mission work. Subsequently, in September of 1999, Bonnie began a two-year contract as English teacher at the Lutheran Church College in Banz which is located in the Western Highlands Province of PNG.

Bonnie possesses a strong sense of Christian tradition nurtured by a lifelong membership in the Lutheran Church. She has been active in Lutheran congregations in all phases of her growth and development. Bonnie's hobbies include volunteer work, reading, writing, walking (in PNG with her dog Chocolate) and movies.
