Pastor Jack Frederick and his wife Valerie have changed career paths in midstream from technology to ministers of the gospel. Little wonder then that having completed more than three years in Cameroon, Africa they returned to mission service on another continent.
Jack and Valerie were ELCIC missionaries with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Cameroon (EELC) from October 1999 to May 2003. Jack served as pastor of the Cross and Crown English congregation in Ngaoundere, provided English radio broadcasts at Sawtu Linjiila radio station, and supervised the installation of electronic equipment at the station. Valerie assisted Jack with congregational ministry and the EELC with their AIDS awareness/prevention program.
After a short time back in Canada, the Fredericks accepted a VIM assignment in Guyana, South America which began in August 2004. They serve the Redeemer Lutheran Parish in Georgetown where they appreciate the congregation's mission outreach including its food programs for needy students and elders in the community. Jack is also the interim pastor for the Ascension Parish which has three congregations in the Georgetown area.
Jack and Valerie were born and married in Manitoba and together raised a family of four. Jack worked for four years (1948-52) with the Canadian national Railroad and then trained as a radar technician with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for three years. After leaving the RCAF, Jack had a career for over 20 years as a radar and electronics technician in Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland (satellite tracking/NASA) that included positions with private companies, Canada Post and Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL). Valerie worked in data processing at AECL in the 1970s and as administrative assistant at Wilfred Laurier University for four years.
Jack graduated from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary (WLS) with a Diploma Degree in 1983, followed by a BA from Wilfred Laurier University in 1986, and then went on to receive a MDiv from WLS in 1986. He served as a pastor in Ontario at St. Peter (Sullivan)/St. James (Williamsford), Trinity (Windsor), and most recently, Holy Cross (Midland).
Jack has volunteered as a hockey and baseball coach, a Boy Scout leader and with the big Brothers organization. Valerie has been a hospital volunteer and church secretary. When near ice, Jack remains active in hockey and skiing while Valerie's hobbies include reading, computers and crafts. The Fredericks enjoy bird watching and walking together to keep fit.
