Pastor Jack Frederick and his wife Valerie have changed career paths in midstream from technology to ministers of the gospel. Little wonder then that, having completed two years as ELCIC Volunteers in Mission (VIM) at Cross and Crown Lutheran congregation in Ngaoundere, Cameroon, they returned in January of 2002 for another two years as ELCIC Short-term Missionaries. Previously supported in their VIM service by friends based in Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Midland, ON, the Fredericks are now sponsored by congregations across the ELCIC.
In addition to serving again as pastor of Cross and Crown, Jack will provide English radio broadcasts at Sawtu Linjiila radio station, and supervise the installation of electronic equipment at the station. Valerie will assist Jack with congregational ministry in addition to providing support to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon with their AIDS ministry program.
Jack and Valerie were born and married in Manitoba and together raised a family of four. Jack worked for four years (1948-52) with the Canadian national Railroad and then trained as a radar technician with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) for three years. After leaving the RCAF, Jack had a career for over 20 years as a radar and electronics technician in Manitoba, Ontario and Newfoundland (satellite tracking/NASA) that included positions with private companies, Canada Post and Atomic Energy of Canada (AECL).
Jack graduated from Waterloo Lutheran Seminary (WLS) with a Diploma Degree in 1983, followed it by a BA from Wilfred Laurier University in 1986, and then went on to receive a MDiv from WLS in 1986. He served as a pastor in Ontario at St. Peter (Sullivan)/St. James (Williamsford), Trinity (Windsor), and most recently, Holy Cross (Midland).
Valerie worked in data processing at AECL in the 1970s and as administrative assistant at Wilfred Laurier University for four years. Jack has volunteered as a hockey and baseball coach, a Boy Scout leader and with the big Brothers organization. Valerie has been a hospital volunteer and church secretary. When near ice Jack remains active in hockey and skiing while Valerie's hobbies include reading, computers and crafts. The Fredericks enjoy bird watching and walking together to keep fit.
