Mission in the name of Christ takes on new forms in the new millenium! A new spirit of co-operation and new vehicles for funding have sent Dr. Stuart and Margaret Brown, of the Anglican Church of Canada, to Garoua, Cameroon where Stuart serves as General Secretary of the Joint Christian Ministry in West Africa (JCMWA).

As the name Joint Christian Ministry in West Africa suggests, Stuart oversees a networking organization for churches and mission organizations working among the Fulani people of West and Central Africa. One of the largest Muslim ethnic groups in Africa today, there are about 20 million Fulanis, some nomadic or semi-nomadic cattle herders, some sedentary people living in villages and towns. Far from being a sort of "super mission" organization, JCMWA works to exchange information, resources, experiences, and training for its 25 members, the majority of which are Lutheran churches.

In his work with JCMWA, Stuart has built on almost 50 years of Lutheran World Federation mission, development, and projects with churches in Africa south of the Sahara. Working ecumenically and using witness and dialogue, proclamation and development, he has assisted churches in understanding Islam and the Muslims of their region in keeping with their task of faithfully interpreting the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Born in Brandon, MB, Stuart has both MA and PhD degrees from McGill University in Islamic studies. He has worked in Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, Switzerland, and Canada in universities, church councils, and with the World Council of Churches. The author of Nearest in Affection: Towards a Christian Understanding of Islam, he speaks English, French, and Arabic.

Celebrating the co-operative nature of their placement, the Browns were commissioned for service in St. Martin's Anglican Church in Pickering, ON, in a joint service with the congregation of Peace Lutheran Church, Pickering. As sending church, the ELCIC formally employs Dr. Brown while the Danish Sudan Mission, a member of the Standing Committee of JCMWA, provides the funding to support this new mission arrangement.

The Browns are coming to the end of their four year assignment with JCMWA. They will resettle in Canada in May 2004
