We welcome and give thanks for our Convention Musician, Brendan Lord. Brendan is a Doctoral student in Choral Conducting from the University of Alberta, Executive Director of the Alberta Choral Federation, sessional instructor at the Augustana Faculty of the University of Alberta, and regular and guest conductor of many choirs. Together with his proficiency on the piano, Brendan brings the choir and ensemble as the other primary instruments of leading assembly liturgy and song at this Convention. Brendan has prepared many arrangements for choir and other instruments, including choral arrangements for Holy Communion setting 6 in Evangelical Lutheran Worship.
The choir at Opening Worship was composed of local musicians and delegates of this Convention. Our thanks to all choir members for leading us in assembly song and liturgy.
Our thanks to Heather Hay, cellist for Opening Worship and Evening Prayer.
Many thanks to all who shared leadership in Opening Worship, our Presider and preacher, National Bishop Susan Johnson; Assisting Minister, Stephanie Olson; Cantor, Lorraine Reinhardt; members of the Youth Delegation for their various assisting roles; and readers, Echo Fettes and Colleen Vogel; other Convention delegates for serving as Communion Assistants, as well as our Convention Chaplains and Bishops.
Thank you also to “Phillip Melanchthon” for interrupting our worship with reflections from the Augsburg Confession and calling us to remember our Confessional heritage.
Behind the scenes are two incredibly helpful “sacristans” who have prepared and washed and carried and dressed and decorated and attended to our worship with care and grace, and remain calm through it all. Thank you Barb Lyseng and Carolyn Speakman for all your assistance.
Thursday Evening Prayer was led by Clifford and Lorraine Reinhardt and members of Chor Leoni Men’s Choir of Vancouver. We thank these wonderful singers for leading us through the beautiful music of Evening Prayer.
The dancer was Carmelle Mohr. We thank Carmelle for embodying the text and music of our prayers with such grace.
The reader was Anne Krueger and preacher, Bishop Cindy Halmarson. Our thanks to both for wonderful proclamations of the Word.
The Communion Table – is from the UBC Lutheran Campus Centre. It was commissioned over 40 years ago during the tenure of Pastor C. Robert Pearson as Campus Chaplain. Pastor Don Johnson, who followed Pastor Pearson, believes the Table was designed and built by Tony Bessig.
The Baptismal Font and Paschal candle stand also from the UBC Lutheran Campus Centre are believed to have been built at a similar time by Del Bauming.
The Ambo, or “place of the word” was commissioned for the Convention by local Worship Chair Pastor Christoph Reiners, and designed and built by Al Riegert of Peace Lutheran, Abbottsford. (Al’s hope was that the Ambo could be “auctioned” or purchased for a congregation’s use and the proceeds be used in support of Canadian Lutheran World relief.) Our great thanks to Al for this gift to the Convention’s worship.
The Processional Cross has been graciously offered for use at our Convention by the Vancouver School of Theology here on the campus of UBC. Many thanks to Richard Leggett of VST for use of the Cross as well as other sacramental vessels.
The Parasols and stands as well as large offering baskets have been generously loaned to the Convention by Chintz & Company. We express out thanks to them for their donation.
The Plants are very generously on loan from Van Belle Nursery, Abbotsford, BC arranged by Jim Burkenshaw, City of Refuge coordinator for the Abbotsford Christian Leaders Network. Our thanks to Jim, Van Belle Nursery and Landscape Architect Heather for helping to arrange the plants in the space.
The Decorations “above,” are suspended on a network of “mule tape” a thin nylon webbing that can support up to 200 kg of weight. We thank Telus Corporation and Kathryn Midwood for the donation of this material for our use. The fabrics have been gathered from Lutheran Church of the Cross in Victoria, and the Chapel of the Augustana Campus, University of Alberta. Thank you to both of these communities for their assistance.
Communion Bread was baked for the Convention by Dana McKee and Barbara McDavid of Lutheran Church of the Cross in Victoria. Our thanks to Barbara and Dana for feeding us with heavenly food.
Communion Vessels have been provided by Augustana and Christ Lutheran Churches of Vancouver, Peace, Abbotsford, Church of the Cross, Victoria and Vancouver School of Theology. Vestments have been provided by Christ Church Cathedral, Victoria, and Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver, and from Archdeacon Robert MacRae.
