Tenth Biennial Convention of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada
July 21 - 25, 2005
Winnipeg, Manitoba

In Mission for Others

Meet the convention chaplain, Michael Kurtz

While doing doctoral studies at the University of Toronto, Michael decided on ordained ministry. In 2000, he was ordained at First Lutheran Church in Winnipeg and still serves there as pastor.

Michael is married to Sue Sorensen and together they parent Peter Sorensen and Theo Sorensen-Kurtz. Besides congregational ministry, Michael serves at large on the Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Synod Council and is the Dean of the Metro Conference. Literature, music and gardening are particular interests.

Quoted in an historical profile of pastors published for First Lutheran's 125th Anniversary in 2003, Michael's own words closely parallel the convention theme of a church In Mission for Others.

He wrote: "I believe religion opens you up to the world and isn't something that closes you off. It's important for Christians to be engaged in doing God's work in the world, both individually and congregationally, to be able to speak with people of other religions or no religion. The church should meet the needs both of its own people and those outside the church."

Michael will lead the Eucharistic services at St. John's Chapel each morning before the sessions begin, the devotional periods during the convention and provide prayer support in the assembly at appropriate times, and evening prayer again at St. John's.
