Tenth Biennial Convention of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada
July 21 - 24, 2005
Winnipeg, Manitoba

In Mission for Others

Treasures of the ELCIC

During the convention, an iconostasis or 'representation of the holy' was created using a selection of the artwork received as gifts to the National church from partner churches, visiting church dignitaries, or as tokens of hospitality when our own church officials have visited churches abroad.

The Augsburg Confession 1530-1980, Luther Pokrant (Winnipeg)

Some works strongly represent the cultures from which they come, others contribute to our image of the holy, while still others challenge us to contemplate the 'total otherness' of God who becomes flesh and blood and embraces humanity.

The ELCIC thanks God for the gifts given men and women throughout the world to open a window onto divine revelation. The artist's pondering of the sacred mysteries allows us to embrace more closely God's presence with us at all times and all places. Art from afar offers the opportunity to enter into the suffering and redemption of fellow Christians abroad. Local works let us see in another light what might have become overly familiar. Our church also thanks those who made gifts of these works of art. They are a treasure of our church.

The convention chapel (St. John's College Chapel) was used for the Early Morning Eucharist and prayer services at the close of each day. The chapel was also open throughout the day for delegates and visitors to view items. Thanks to the volunteers and the worship committee for installing this exhibit.
