2005 Laureate, Companion of the Worship Arts

 

The Companion of the Worship Arts received its 2005 laureate, Mrs Elaine Nelson, at the Hymn Festival held at Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, July 23, 2005.

In his introduction, Bishop Telmor Sartison said, "I am deeply moved by her commitment and delight in the world of music and worship." National Bishop Raymond Schultz then placed the medal around her neck and blessed her and her work.

Mrs. Nelson is a church musician who has dedicated her life to offering encouragement to others enabling them to offer their gifts of music in worship. She is a gifted choir director. In addition to the musical direction she has provided in her own congregations, sh has also offered her gifts to the wider church, enlivening the worship of synod conventions and gatherings, Evangelical Lutheran Women (ELW) conventions and youth gatherings.

She is known for her ability to teach children to sing, and she has directed numerous music/drama productions which have been a wonderful outreach into the community. She was also instrumental in the introduction of the Lutheran Book of Worship.

A member of Unity Lutheran Church, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Mrs. Nelson has been a clinician at worship conferences, is the editor of the Synod of Alberta and the Territories worship newsletter, Adoramus, and has offered her service in planning worship for the study conference for church leaders in her synod.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) Companion of the Worship Arts recognizes significant contribution to the worship life of the ELCIC.

The spirit of this honour recognizes ongoing inspiration and encouragement to others and service to God, through worship, spirituality and the arts.The honour is conferred either at the National Convention of the ELCIC or at the ELCIC's national worship conference.

The ELCIC commissioned a medal for presentation to each Companion. The design is based on "The Dance" by liturgical artist, the Rev. Michael Mills, OSA. During convention, this piece was part of the exhibit, Treasures of the ELCIC. It can be seen throughout the year at the National Offices.
