Opening of Convention

The Rev. Raymond Schultz, National Bishop, declared the Tenth Biennial Convention of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) open.

Opening prayer conducted by the Rev. Michael Kurtz, Convention Chaplain.

Welcome and Introductions

Local Arrangements Committee chair, the Rev. Carol Janke, welcomed delegates.

Special guests and those seated at the head table were introduced:

  • National Church Council
  • Conference of Bishops

  • The Very Rev. Don Phillips, Bishop of Rupertsland, Anglican Church of Canada
  • The Rev. Randall Lee, Director, Department of Ecumenical Affairs, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
  • The Rev. Alan Eldrid, Pastor President, United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Argentina and Uruguay

The meeting was informed of other distinguished guests who are expected over weekend.

Greetings

The Rev. Thomas Prachar, President, Central District, Lutheran Church-Canada was introduced and brought greetings. The Rev. Prachar spoke of mission work and the challenge of working in foreign countries.

The Rev. Raymond Schultz thanked Mark Mummert, Seminary Musician at Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, guest Music Director for the convention who provided the music for the opening prayer.

The Chair noted that Ida Reichardt Backman, Interim Editor of Canada Lutheran was unable to attend due to injury.

Dr. Dieter Kays, FaithLife Financial was introduced to the convention. FaithLife Financial was previously Lutheran Life Society and Dr. Kays explained why changes are being made. Their mission continues to be to protect the futures of members.

Mr. Robert Granke, the director of the Lutheran World Federation Department for World Service, was introduced.

Report of the Committee of Registration and Credentials

Denis St. Onge (Chair) reported the following registration figures:

The Rev. Raymond Schultz apologized to delegates for the unauthorized mailing that delegates received concerning the same-sex resolution. Due to clerical errors in the National Office and in the office of the Synod of Alberta and the Territories, the delegate mailing list was released contrary to the provisions of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The Rev. Schultz advised that additional training on the Privacy Policy for the ELCIC will be conducted at the National Office and synod offices.

The Rev. Raymond Schultz ruled that partisan symbols are not to be worn during the convention business sessions and the convention worship.

Adoption of the Agenda

Chair asked for motion to adopt agenda with one change, that the nominations from the floor will occur after the Nomination Committee report.

An unanimous vote was required to pass the motion extending voting privileges according to Bourinot’s Rules of Order, #27 Suspension of the Rules.

Report of National Bishop

The Rev. Susan Johnson assumed the Chair and asked the Rev. Raymond Schultz to comment on the Report of National Bishop. The Bishop pointed out two factual errors and responded to questions.

Report of Vice-President

The Rev. Raymond Schultz assumed the Chair and The Rev. Susan Johnson spoke to her report. She then announced the convention exhibitors and urged delegates to visit their displays.

Introductions

The Rev. Susan Johnson chaired and introduced Dr. Ruth Jensen, Canadian Lutheran World Relief and The Most Rev. Andrew Hutchison, Primate, Anglican Church of Canada.

First ballot for Election of the National Bishop was distributed and collected.

Report of Secretary

Don Storch spoke to the Report of the Secretary.

Report of Treasurer

Mr. Norm Thompson presented the Treasurer’s Report. Budgets and audited financial statements will be presented for acceptance Friday evening.

The Rev. Michael Kurtz, Convention Chaplain closed the session with prayer.
