Invitation to a Celebration

Where: Waterloo Recreation Complex, Father David Bauer Drive, Waterloo
When: 10 am Sunday, July 8, 2001
Who: Everyone! Make it a parish or family outing!. Pack a lunch! Enjoy visiting with old friends and make new ones! Stay on into the afternoon and enjoy scenic Waterloo Park!

For the Anglican Church of Canada, meeting in General Synod at the University of Waterloo, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, meeting in National Convention up the road at Wilfrid Laurier University, Sunday July 8 will mark an historic event. It is both the culmination of decades of dialogue and a step on the road to a deeper relationship in the future.

Each national meeting will have voted on the Waterloo Declaration approved in principle by overwhelmingly positive votes in the years leading up to this occasion. Each will have shared in a joint study on "food and water", social justice issues in the days leading up to Sunday.

The celebration of Full Communion is one in which we are all invited to share: Lutherans, Anglicans, and the wider Christian family! For that reason, the Joint Working Group of the two churches has chosen a site large enough to host a truly extended family gathering: the Waterloo Recreation Complex with a seating capacity of 4,000.

Lutheran and Anglican artists, a few hundred volunteers, a hard working liturgical team and all the folks who make the nuts and bolts fit together will transform this modest hockey arena into a worship space.

Local artist Barb Swartzentruber is creating a series of banners to mark the occasion. A massed choir raised from local parishes will join other musicians to fill the space with hymns dear to each church's tradition. A special hymn of the day has been written by the Reverend Doctor Iain Luke, a member of the joint Working Group

When you arrive you will be met by greeters from St Andrew's Anglican and St Stephen's Lutheran - two local churches that share a long-standing and warm ecumenical friendship. Presiding over the liturgy will be Bishop Telmor Sartison (ELCIC). Archbishop Michael Peers, the Anglican Primate will preach. The prayers, music and presence of those gathered will lift up the many cultures, languages and gifts that we bring to each other in "full communion". Representatives of the Anglican Communion and the Lutheran World Federation, as well as the many ecumenical guests present will be a sign of the wider communion we share as members of Christ's Body.

We will gather to celebrate the steps along the road that have led us to recognize each other as churches sharing the apostolic faith, in which the Gospel is preached in its purity and the sacraments duly administered. We recognize each other's ministries as gifts of God's Holy Spirit to equip the people of God for the work of ministry. This ministry which flows from our common life and walk of discipleship, calls us forward in loving service. July 8 will be a special time to pray that our walk together, our common ministry, may be true in the service of our one Lord.

Please join the celebration. Come to Waterloo, July 8!
