Companion Synod Program
The purpose of a companion relationship in the Companion Synod Program (CSP) is to twin an ELCIC synod with a companion church or church district so that the ELCIC synod and their companion can nurture and strengthen each other for life and mission together within the body of Christ. The companion relationship is an avenue for sharing understandings, faith, worship, prayer, visits, people exchanges and other activities and resources. Companion relationships in the CSP can enhance the relationships at the national level between the ELCIC and companion churches by engaging ELCIC synods, congregations and members in mission at a personal level with their companions.
There are five synods in the ELCIC and each has a companion relationship in the Companion Synod Program. ELCIC members are encouraged to contact their synod office to find out more about their companion relationship:
British Columbia Synod
- Peruvian Evangelical Lutheran Church (ILEP)
Synod of Alberta and the Territories
- Evangelical Lutheran Church of Colombia (IELCO)
Saskatchewan Synod
- United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Argentina (IELU)
Manitoba/Northwestern Ontario Synod
- Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cameroon (EELC)
Eastern Synod
Evangelical
- Lutheran Church in Guyana (ELCG)
The ELCIC’s participation in God’s mission in the world is being addressed through a partnership agreement with ELCA Global Mission (GM). ELCA GM has companion synod facilitators on staff who will eventually work directly with the companion synod contacts in ELCIC synods. ELCIC synods interested in a second relationship could be twinned with a companion on the “waiting list” of synods, districts and churches that have expressed a desire to participate in the ELCA Companion Synod Program.
ELCIC GM is now using the word companion in the same way it is used by ELCA GM. Previously in the ELCIC, companion was used only to refer to a church which has a relationship with an ELCIC synod in the Companion Synod Program. Companion now also refers to a church outside of Canada and the United States which has a bilateral relationship at the national church level with the ELCIC. Companion church is the term that ELCIC GM is using in place of partner church.
