Signs of Hope, Practices of Love

Practice Advocacy - Lift Up Our Voices and Lives for God's Justice

(Note: this page will be developed once this initiative of the Signs of Hope campaign is launched.)

As Lutherans we stand within a rich prophetic tradition. The lives and voices of the Hebrew prophets continue to reverberate today though our scriptures as they call for justice and for us to care for the poor and marginalized. Jesus’ life continues to be a rich prophetic witness and Word for us. We see this in his welcoming the excluded to the feast of God, in his acts of healing and feeding, in his death under the Roman authorities and in his words which remind us that, as we do unto the least of these so we do unto Christ (Matthew 25).

This prophetic tradition has continued into Christianity. We are reminded of John Chrysostom’s sermons against the rich having silver chamber pots while the needy suffered. We delight in St. Francis’ life of poverty. We are guided by Luther’s call for princes to rule based on the gospel and establishing community chests for the poor. We also live, reminded of the life of Martin Luther King Jr., Desmond Tutu Dorothy Day.

This rich tradition, the Word of God and the guiding of the Holy Spirit all remind us that we are also called to cry out with our prophetic voices and lives. As a church, made up of the people of God, we are called to cry out for the poor, against injustice, and for the weak and marginalized.
