Seminaries

Every candidate for lay diaconal or ordained ministry in the ELCIC is approved by a specific Synod Council but must be qualified for service throughout the ELCIC. Candidates are considered for service according to national standards and by means of common procedures.

This church values a consistent candidacy process and acceptance by any one synod council entails approval for ministry throughout the ELCIC. The national standards and procedures have been developed through years of experience by national boards and working groups and in consultation with leaders in the synodical candidacy process and Canadian Lutheran theological education.

The Lutheran Theological Seminary in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, was established to prepare candidates for the Lutheran pastoral ministry. It also serves qualified students who wish to pursue the study of theology for its own sake, or solely out of academic interest. Waterloo Lutheran Seminary provides for the scholarly study of the Christian faith in an interdenominational setting leading to degrees in divinity and pastoral counselling. We also offer diplomas in Theology and Spirituality in a Health Care Setting. Waterloo Lutheran Seminary is owned and operated by the Eastern Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada. Waterloo Lutheran Seminary is a federated college of Wilfrid Laurier University, who grants the seminary degrees. We are also a fully accredited member of the Association of Theological Schools in United States and Canada.
