One of the most important agenda items at the ELCIC National Convention, July 21-24, 2005 will be the election of a National Bishop.
"The election of a bishop is always experienced as a critical moment in the life of the Church, one full of promise and expectation. We depend upon the ministry of bishops to provide leadership, vision, wisdom, guidance, public witness and pastoral care. Yet, often it is very hard for us to articulate or even to begin to describe carefully our hopes and desires for this ministry."
To support congregations as they prepare for this decision through prayer and discussion, a resource titledCalling A Bishophas been revised and is available for download at http://www.elcic.ca/convention/2005/elect.html. You may also order one print copy for photocopying by contacting the ELCIC Orders Desk [984-9177 or orders@elcic.ca]
What does our constitution say? Who may be elected as Bishop? If this process is lead by the Holy Spirit, how and when is it appropriate to discuss this issue? What is the election process? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, gather up a group of people at your church and use Calling a Bishop to guide your conversation.
